The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
To enable people to know wisdom and instruction, and to discern wise words,
It teaches people wisdom, benevolence, fairness, and integrity in their conduct.
Make the foolish wise, and the young knowledgeable and resourceful.
May the wise hear and increase their knowledge, and may the intelligent gain wisdom.
It enables people to understand proverbs and parables, and to comprehend the words and riddles of wise men.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
My son, listen to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s law;
For it shall be a crown upon your head, and a chain of gold around your neck.
My son, if an evil person tempts you, do not go with him.
If they say, “Come with us! We will lay in wait to shed blood and to ambush the innocent.”
We were like the underworld, swallowing them whole; they were like those who went down into the pit, and we devoured them whole.
We will obtain all kinds of treasures and fill our houses with the spoils we have plundered;
You share with all of us; we all share one bag.
My son, do not walk with them, for you will be hindered from following their path;
For their feet run to do evil, and they swiftly shed human blood.
Like a bird, it does not flinch even when a net is set before it;
These people lie in ambush to shed their own blood; they lie in wait to kill themselves.
All those who are greedy for money are like this; they take the life of those who have acquired wealth.
Wisdom cries out in the marketplace and resonates in open spaces;
Shouting in the bustling streets, speaking at the city gates and within the city, saying:
"How long will you fools love foolishness, mockers delight in mockery, and idiots hate knowledge?"
Turn to me because of my rebuke; I will pour out my Spirit on you and show you my words.
I call out, but you will not listen; I admonish, but no one heeds my words.
Instead, they rejected all my advice and refused to accept my rebuke.
When disaster befalls you, I will laugh; when terror comes upon you, I will scoff.
Terror comes upon you like a raging wind; disaster comes like a storm; hardship and suffering befall you.
Then you will call upon me, but I will not answer you; you will seek me earnestly, but you will not find me.
Because you hate knowledge and do not delight in the fear of the Lord;
They do not heed my advice and despise all my rebukes;
Therefore they will eat the fruit of their own making and be full of their own schemes.
A fool who goes astray will surely kill himself; a stubborn person who is complacent will surely perish.
"Only those who obey me will dwell in peace and tranquility, and will fear no evil."
