Scripture:
"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6)

Story: The Mother's Seed

In ancient Israel, there lived a young boy named Elijah. His family was poor; his father had died early, leaving only his mother and him to depend on each other. Although life was hard, his mother never gave up on teaching her child. Every morning, before the sun rose, his mother would take Elijah's hand and lead him to the fields. As she tended the crops, she would softly recite the words of the Mosaic Law. "My son, remember, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge," his mother would always say. Although Elijah was too young to fully understand, he absorbed these words into his heart. The villagers often mocked this mother: "Your son is too young; what does he know? Wait until he's older!"
But she simply smiled and replied, "Today's seeds will become tomorrow's towering trees."

The Boy's Choice

Years later, Elijah had grown into a strong young man. He had made a group of friends in the village who often invited him to play pranks, and sometimes even considered stealing. One day, his friends urged him, "Let's steal the rich man's sheep tonight! He has so many, it won't hurt us to take more." Elijah's heart was stirred, for his family was poor and often lacked enough food. But at that moment, he suddenly remembered his mother's words: "My son, if an evil person tempts you, do not go with him" (Proverbs 1:10). He struggled internally; his friends' voices urged him on, but his mother's teachings were stronger in his heart. He took a deep breath and shook his head: "No, I cannot do such a thing." His friends mocked him as a coward, but Elijah turned and left, feeling a firm peace within him.

Adult perseverance

Years passed, and Elijah became a merchant, frequently traveling between towns to do business. One day, a companion suggested he tamper with weights and measures to quickly make a fortune. "Just give a little less weight and charge a little more, who will notice? We'll be rich soon!" his companion said, his eyes gleaming with greed. Elijah was struck by a sudden realization, remembering his mother's teachings: "Live uprightly, for the Lord delights in the honest." He resolutely refused. Although he earned less as a result, his business gradually earned the trust of the people. In time, he became a respected and honest merchant in the village. People said, "We feel safe doing business with Elijah."

Looking back in old age

Years later, an elderly Elijah, his hair white, sat at his doorstep, watching his children and grandchildren play in the yard. He smiled as he reflected on his life, the image of his mother appearing in his mind. His mother had long since passed away, but her tireless teachings, like a lamp, had always illuminated his path. Whether he was tempted by friends in his youth or faced with the temptation of greed in adulthood, he could remember those gentle yet firm words: "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." Elijah looked up and prayed softly to heaven: "Mother, your seed has borne fruit in my heart, and it remains to this day."

Reflection and application—this is the true essence of Proverbs 22:6.

  • Good manners are not a matter of a momentary lecture, but of long-term companionship and setting a good example.
  • Children have tender hearts, and their parents' words are like seeds that will take deep root.
  • As children grow up, even when they face trials and tribulations, those words will still resonate in their hearts, reminding them to choose integrity.

Dear parents, do not underestimate the power of a single teaching, a single prayer, or a single testimony you give each day. Your children may not understand it now, but years later, when they stand at the crossroads of life, your words will be their guide.
