Proverbs 3-6 | The Path of Wisdom, Avoiding Temptation, and Living a Diligent and Upright Life

 Introduction

These four chapters are interwoven with the contrast between wisdom and folly, admonishing us to trust in the Lord wholeheartedly and not rely on our own understanding (Chapter 3); to maintain wisdom and walk in the path of light and righteousness (Chapter 4); to avoid the temptations of adulterers and enjoy the pure blessings bestowed by God in marriage (Chapter 5); and to be diligent and not lazy, carefully obeying the teachings of our parents and avoiding the wicked and practices that God hates (Chapter 6). These lessons remind us that true life and blessings come from wisdom, purity, and the fear of God.

 Scripture: Proverbs 3

Proverbs 3: Trusting in the Wisdom of Jehovah and the Blessings of Life

My son, do not forget my laws; let your heart keep my commandments;
For length of days and long life and peace will he add to you.
Do not let lovingkindness and truth depart from you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will find favor and respect in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
This will heal your navel and nourish your bones.
Honor the LORD with your substance and with the firstfruits of all your increase;
Then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your winepresses will overflow with new wine.
My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his rebuke;
For whom the LORD loves he rebukes, as a father the son in whom he delights.
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom and understanding.
For the gain of wisdom is better than the gain of silver, and its profit is to be preferred than fine gold;
More precious than pearls; all your desires cannot compare with them.
In her right hand she holds longevity, and in her left hand she holds wealth.
Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; happy are those who take hold of her.
The Lord by wisdom founded the earth, and by understanding established the heavens;
With knowledge the deep is rent asunder, and the sky is made to drop dew.
My son, keep sound wisdom and discretion; do not let them go out of your sight;
Then he will be life to your soul and beauty to your neck.
Then you will walk safely, and your foot will not stumble.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Do not be afraid of sudden terror; do not be terrified when the wicked are destroyed.
For the LORD is your trust; he will keep your foot from being snared.
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your hand to do it.
If you have it already, do not say to your neighbor, "Go away, and come back tomorrow, and I will give it to you."
Do not plot harm against your neighbor, since he lives near you.
Do not quarrel with someone without cause if he has done you no harm.
You shall not envy the violent man, nor choose his way.
For the perverse are an abomination to the LORD, but the upright are his friends.
The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the habitation of the righteous.
He scorns the scoffers, but gives grace to the humble.
The wise will inherit honor, but the promotion of fools is only shame.

Proverbs Chapter 4 (Union Version, Traditional Chinese, Public Domain, No Copyright)

Sons, listen to your father's instruction and pay attention to gain understanding.
I give you good instruction; do not forsake my teachings.
I am a filial son in front of my father and the only beloved child in the eyes of my mother.
My father taught me, “Retain my words in your heart and keep my commandments, and you will live.”
Get wisdom, get understanding, and do not forget or stray from the words of my mouth.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will keep you.
Wisdom is the first thing, therefore get wisdom; and with all your getting get understanding.
Lift up wisdom, and she will exalt you; embrace it, and she will honor you.
She will place a crown of beauty on your head and give you a diadem of honor.
My son, listen to my words, and you will live longer.
I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in paths of uprightness.
When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.
Hold fast to instruction, do not let go; guard it, for it is your life.
Do not walk in the way of the wicked; do not follow the path of evildoers.
Avoid it, don't pass by; turn around and go away.
Such people cannot sleep unless they do evil; and their sleep is restless unless they cause someone to stumble.
They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until the full day.
The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know why they stumble.
My son, pay attention to my words, and give ear to my sayings;
Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart.
For they have life to those who find them, and are a healing medicine for all their bodies.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Put away from you a perverse mouth, and falsity from your lips.
Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your gaze should be directed straight ahead.
Make the paths for your feet straight, and establish all your ways.
Do not turn to the right or to the left; keep your foot from evil.

📖 Scripture: Proverbs 5

Proverbs 5 (Union Version, Traditional Chinese, Public Domain, No Copyright)

My son, give heed to my wisdom, and give ear to my understanding.
That you may keep discretion, and your lips may preserve knowledge.
For the lips of an adulteress drip with honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil.
But in the end it is bitter as wormwood and sharp as a two-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death, and her steps take hold of Sheol.
So she cannot find the path of life; her ways are uncertain, she does not know it.
Now therefore, my sons, obey me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
Keep your ways far from her, and do not go near the door of her house.
Lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel;
Lest a stranger be filled with your strength, and your labors go into a foreigner's house;
At last, your skin and body will be gone, and you will lament,
How I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof,
I did not listen to the voice of my teachers, nor pay attention to those who taught me.
I almost fell into all kinds of evil in the holy congregation.
You shall drink water from your own cistern, living water from your own well.
Should your fountains overflow abroad, your rivers flow in the streets?
It belongs to you alone and may not be shared with outsiders.
Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth.
She is like a lovely deer, a delightful doe; may her breast always satisfy you, and her love always keep you in love.
My son, why do you desire a whore? Why do you embrace the bosom of a strange woman?
For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he makes all his paths straight.
The wicked will be caught in his own sins; his own transgressions will entangle him like cords.
He will die because he has not been disciplined, and because of his great folly he will go astray.

📖 Scripture: Proverbs 6

Proverbs Chapter 6 (Union Version, Traditional Chinese, Public Domain, No Copyright)

My son, if you have been surety for your friend, if you have struck a sceptre for a stranger,
You are snared in the words of your mouth, you are caught in the words of your lips.
My son, now that you have fallen into the hands of your friends, do this to save yourself:
Humble yourself and beg your friend;
Give no sleep to thine eyes, and no slumber to thine eyelids;
Deliver yourself like a deer from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Go, lazy man, and observe the ways of the ant, and you will become wise.
Ants have no commander, no officer, no king,
They prepare their food in the summer and gather their produce in the harvest.
How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you awaken from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to lie down,
Poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

A scoundrel and a wicked man walks with a perverse mouth;
Express with your eyes, signal with your feet, point with your fingers;
A perverse heart devises evil plans continually, and sows discord.
Therefore the disaster will come suddenly; it will be destroyed in an instant without remedy.

There are six things that the LORD hates, yea, seven that are an abomination to him:
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to mischief,
A false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

My son, keep your father's commandments and do not forsake your mother's teachings;
Bind them always on your heart and hang them around your neck.
When you walk, he will lead you; when you lie down, he will watch over you; when you awake, he will talk with you.
For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.
It will keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a strange woman.
Do not let your heart be drawn to her beauty, and do not let your eyes be seduced by her.
For a whore can reduce a man to a piece of bread, and a prostitute preys on his precious life.

If a man holds fire in his bosom, will his clothes not be burned?
If a man walks on hot coals, will his feet not be burned?
So shall he who goes in to his neighbor's wife: whoever touches her shall not be unpunished.

A thief who steals to satisfy his hunger when he is hungry is not despised;
But if he is found, he shall pay sevenfold, and shall give all that he hath in his house.
He who commits adultery with a woman lacks knowledge; he who does it will lose his life.
He will be wounded and disgraced, and his shame will never be wiped away.
For the jealousy of a man turneth unto wrath, and in vengeance he showeth no mercy.
He will not care for any ransom; even though you offer him many gifts, he will not give up.
